Tuesday - April 5, 2010

Today's class will focus on retention and disarms. Bring your holster, blue gun, and training knife if you have one. If not, we'll have plenty to borrow. If anyone wants to stay after a few minutes and shoot a short course of fire (25 rds) at the end of class, bring your range gear. I have a short CoF another instructor asked us to test this week. See you at the range.

Tuesday - March 29, 2010

Be afraid.

Tuesday - March 22, 2010

Today we'll work on shooting from awkward positions and talk about muzzle control when you're not on the square range. We'll also discuss the difference between "dangerous" and "unsafe" if forced to violate the normal safety rules due to your environment. We'll be shooting a modified version of the Iron Cross drill as well as working several other drills that most of you have probably not seen or practiced before to help you establish confidence in safely manipulating the muzzle in a non-typical environment. This is not a beginner class and safety violations will not be tolerated.

Tuesday - March 15, 2010

Accuracy. Today we'll be working on accuracy by shooting at some further distances and talking about why you might want to shoot certain drills up close to help polish your accuracy at distance.

Tuesday - March 8, 2010

Low Light Shooting. Make sure to bring your flashlights, because we'll be going over a few techniques with the lights on and the rest of the night's shooting will be with the lights off.

Tuesday - March 1, 2011

It's first Tuesday, so that means this will not be a live-fire class. However, we're not going to cover the normal combatives material this week. Instead, we're going to spend some time talking about medical procedures and what to do if you or a loved one is on the receiving end of a gunshot. We'll talk about some of the products that are on the market and you'll get some hands on practice "treating" your classmates. We'll also discuss constructing your own trauma kit and the difference between a trauma kit and a first-aid kit.

Also, I have a surprise in store for everyone if my hillbilly technology permits. That second part will be a surprise. See you at the range.

Tuesday - February 22, 2011

Today we'll cover the two biggest sticking points most people saw in their own shooting last week--time to first shot and reloads. We'll spend a lot of time shooting one-shot drills and the importance of making these a vital part of your practice sessions.

Tuesday - February 15, 2010

Video and Performance Tracking. Today we're going to talk about performance tracking and how to monitor your progress as a shooter. We'll cover journaling, record-keeping, and how to set-up your own practice sessions that are tailored to your own specific skill development. We'll cover using video as a tool analyze your shooting and everyone in the class will get a chance to shoot a few basic drills on video. After recording, we'll watch the videos as a class and everyone will get a chance to critique their own shooting.

Bring all your normal range gear and 50 rounds of ammo.

Tuesday - February 8, 2011

Bill Drills. We'll be using "Bill Drills" as a vehicle to talk about trigger maniupulation under speed and the concept of adequate sight picture, or "seeing what you need to see to see the shot you need to make." Depending on the number of shooters in the class, we could be shooting a lot. Bring 250 rounds just in case.

Tuesday - February 1, 2011

Combatives Tuesday. It's the first Tuesday, so that means we'll be in the classroom working some combatives skills. This will not be a live-fire class.

For this class, we'll be focusing on developing our striking and understanding its proper context, particularly when faced with real-life threats where the number of adversaries may be more than it initially appears. We'll talk about the importance being able to strike and move, remaining mobile and keeping aware of your surroundings. We'll also talk about using an effective strike pre-emptively to buy time to escape or to deploy a tool. Everyone will have a chance to work the strikes on pads and on a padded opponent. At the end of class, there will be some force-on-force scenarios for those that want to participate in them and practice the skills against a live opponent.

Fitness level required for the class is at a minimum, but please make sure you are adequately hydrated and have eaten something since lunch.

See you at the range.
